writing workshops

The Carmel Writers’ Workshop offers a welcoming and motivating environment for writers of fiction and memoir who seek the benefits of focused attention, inspiration, and support. The Workshop is a space to trust the power of the imagination, to go deeper into the pleasures of language, voice, and character, and to practice placing writing at the center of your life. Vivid storytelling is an ancient practice that remains as urgently needed as ever.

The workshop will be led by C. Kevin Smith, local writer and teacher and graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He was named the University of Iowa’s Provost’s Visiting Writer in Fiction, a distinguished postgraduate fellowship given in recognition of teaching excellence. He is currently a Steinbeck Fellow at San Jose State University.

The deadline for applications to the Carmel Writers’ Workshop is January 31, 2018. Click here to apply to the Workshop. A writing sample—5 pages minimum, 20 pages maximum, double-spaced—is required to apply. There is a non-refundable $5 application fee.

The Workshop will meet Thursday evenings for eight weeks, February 15–April 5, 2018, 6:30-8:30 pm, in Carmel’s High Meadow neighborhood. The cost of the workshop is $400, which includes the eight-week class and a private consultation with Kevin on your workshop manuscript.
